Safety in a Scary World: 10 Bible Verses For Halloween

Halloween is a strange date on the calendar each year. Despite its Christian origins, the holiday goes in many different directions. Here are some Bible verses about how scary the world can be — and where supernatural safety can be found.

1: Tempted With the Wild Beasts

“The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. And he was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to him.” — Mark 1:12-13

2: The Roaring Lion

“Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour.” — Peter 5:8

3: The Dragon

“And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had borne the male child.  … Then the dragon was angry with the woman,[c] and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and bear testimony to Jesus. And he stood on the sand of the sea”. — Revelation 12:13,17

4: The Second Beast

“Then I saw another beast which rose out of the earth; it had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon.  … Let him who has understanding reckon the number of the beast, for it is a human number, its number is six hundred and sixty-six.” — Revelation 13:11, 18

5: The Sensation of Fear

“Dread came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake. A spirit glided past my face; the hair of my flesh stood up.” — Job 4:14-15

6: The Witch of Endor

“Saul disguised himself and put on other garments, and went, he and two men with him; and they came to the woman by night. And he said, ‘Divine for me by a spirit, and bring up for me whomever I shall name to you.’ … Then the woman said, ‘Whom shall I bring up for you?; He said, ‘Bring up Samuel for me.’ When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice.” — 1 Samuel 28:8,11-12

7: Cucumber Scarecrows

“Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. Be not afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.” — Jeremiah 10:5

8: The Return of the Unclean Spirit

“When the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, he passes through waterless places seeking rest, but he finds none. Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then he goes and brings with him seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first. So shall it be also with this evil generation.” — Matthew 43-45

9: Our Victory Is Certain

“If God is for us, who can be against us? … I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 8; Oct. 31, 2019, First Reading at Mass

10: Safe With God

“The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them. They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace.” — Wisdom, 3; All Souls Day Mass, First Reading
