WATCH: Faith Heroes Propel Benedictine ‘Forward’

Benedictine College debuted its newest video, “Forward, always Forward” online this week.

The video was created for a meeting of college leaders who gathered to determine the school’s future.

The last such meeting, 10 years ago, at the college’s 150th anniversary, began the process which created Benedictine 2020: A Vision for Greatness. Now, the college’s board of directors, faculty and administration are looking to create a follow-up plan to take the college into the future.

“We wanted to show the huge growth on campus over the last 10 years while capturing the spirit that made that growth possible,” said Nathan Pickman, the college’s Digital Media Manager and the video’s creator.

The video quotes the words of figures of importance to the college, starting and ending with legendary 19th century U.S. Catholic missionary Benedictine Archabbot Boniface Wimmer.

“Forward. Always forward. Everywhere forward. We must not be held back by debts, bad years or by difficulties of the times. Man’s adversity is God’s opportunity.

“The victory will be ours if we continue our efforts courageously, even at times when they appear futile.”

“People plant trees though they are certain that the fruit will benefit only the next generation.”

Next, students read the words of late Benedictine alumna Dr. Wangari Maathai, the only graduate of a U.S. Catholic college to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

“A tree has roots in the soil yet reaches to the sky.  In order to aspire we need to be grounded. And no matter how high we go, It is from our roots that we draw sustenance.

From St. John Paul II come the words:

“So I say to you, young people of America, as we enter the new millennium … Do not be afraid! Do not be satisfied with mediocrity.”

“In you, there is hope, for you belong to the future, as the future belongs to you.”

Pope Benedict XVI’s words follow:

“The world promises you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness.”

The closing again quotes Archabbot Wimmer

“Our tradition of moving forward must continue forward, always forward. Everywhere forward.”
