Raven Mixes Pre-Med & Human Rights in New York

The Gregorian Fellows Leadership Program at Benedictine College promotes Catholic identity in public life by forming a new generation of leaders who unite faith and reason in their work. On Fellows Fridays, the Gregorian Institute will introduce you to some of these extraordinary students.

Pre-med student Zachary Zimmer worked with U.N. issues as an intern for the World Youth Alliance in New York.

Zachary Zimmer, class of 2022, is a pre-med-track biology and philosophy major from Edgewood, Colo. The World Youth Alliance is a non-profit organization that promotes human dignity and serves as an NGO to the United Nations.

“Through World Youth Alliance’s Certified Training Program, I have gained a crucial understanding of the human person and our inherent and inalienable dignity,” Zimmer said.

His specific work was a perfect fit with his medical background.

“My projects are specifically focused on the World Youth alliance women’s health program called FEMM (Fertility Education Medical Management). I found FEMM’s holistic approach very insightful and essential to a medical understanding of overall health.”

Zimmer’s work “included auditing the FEMM Medical Management course for medical professionals,” he said. He also “flew doctors and other medical professionals from all over the world into the headquarters in New York and ran other logistics for the event.”

He expects the experience to directly benefit his future medical career. “I definitely enjoyed speaking with a number of doctors at the FEMM course, specifically Dr. Tim Flanigan, an infectious disease physician in Rhode Island, and the doctors of the Catholic Tanzanian coalition.”
